The FireSmart BC Wildfire Mitigation Program (WMP) was designed to engage residents in voluntary wildfire mitigation activities by offering a professional home assessment with property-specific recommendations

A Wildfire Mitigation Program Assessment provides residents with:

  • An in-depth, on-site assessment conducted by your local Wildfire Mitigation Specialist.
  • An opportunity for property owners to identify mitigation actions unique to their property.
  • A detailed follow-up report with customized mitigation actions designed to measurably reduce the wildfire risk to your property.
  • An opportunity to earn FireSmart acknowledgement for your mitigation achievements through a certificate. The certificate is given upon successful completion of required mitigation actions and an on-site follow-up inspection.

The Wildfire Mitigation Program assessments are only for properties with fully built homes on them. These bare land assessments will look at fuel type, topography, landscaping considerations, and building material choice to give you some great advice on how to build for wildfire resilience.

Please note that these assessments are not eligible for a rebate. A fully built home with a Wildfire Mitigation Program assessment is required to access the rebate

Being on this list does not constitute an endorsement or referral by the RDCK. We do not guarantee, certify, insure, or inspect work completed by contractors on this list. Always do your own research prior to hiring any contractor.

Please note that The RDCK FireSmart Rebate program is separate and independent from the Wildfire Resilience Contractors List.

Frequently Asked Questions

The FireSmart BC Program is a provincial initiative based on ongoing research that is aimed at reducing the risk of wildfire damage to homes, communities, and forests. Everyone’s actions count. Whether you’re a homeowner, renter, or community leader, following FireSmart principles helps build a wildfire-resilient British Columbia.

The RDCK has been on the leading edge of FireSmart programming and initiatives since 2017 through offering home assessments, supporting neighbourhood initiatives, and facilitating residential rebates for FireSmart actions. We’re here to help you get started and take proven steps toward protecting your home and your community from wildfire.

Sign up for our newsletter here or reach out directly to firesmart@rdck.bc.ca or 250.352.1539. Our FireSmart Program Coordinator is available year-round to answer your questions. I am looking for information on the RDCK FireSmart Rebate Program. For information on current rebate programming please visit the rebate section on this page or contact us.

FireSmart Certification is an opportunity to earn acknowledgement for your mitigation achievements through a certificate issued by FireSmart BC. The certificate is given upon successful completion of required mitigation actions identified in the home assessment and an on-site follow-up inspection.

The best way to answer this question is to connect with your insurance provider directly. Some insurance companies provide discounts or rebates for assessment completion, while others require certification through the Wildfire Mitigation Program (WMP). The Wildfire Mitigation Program is engaging with numerous insurance providers. For information on this please visit: https://firesmartbc.ca/wmp/insurance/.

Ad-hoc arrangements may be determined solely through agreements between insurers and their customers. The RDCK and the WMP do not take any accountability for the tenants or outcomes of these arrangements.  Through any ad-hoc process, it is important to know that you should never have to provide your WMP Assessment, rather only the WMP Certificate of Completion upon request.

Completing all FireSmart recommendations will greatly increase a structure’s survivability without the need of any response intervention or sprinkler deployment. FireSmart BC does not recommend that individuals (residents and property owners) install their own structure protection sprinkler systems. Learn more about water use, sprinkler protection, and FireSmart here

Effectively, they are the same. The name change came into effect when FireSmart BC took on the home assessment program in early 2025. The purpose of both programs remains the same: to help empower homeowners to become more resilient to wildfire. The RDCK delivered Home Partners Program assessments from 2018 to 2024 and Wildfire Mitigation Program assessments from 2025 onwards.

If you consented to have your data transferred from FireSmart Canada to FireSmart BC in the fall of 2024, we will have access to your home assessment. If you did not consent to this data transfer, and you do not have a copy of your assessment in your filescomplete this form through FireSmart Canada: https://firesmartcanada.ca/home-partners-assessment-report-request/
