Building Department

Established in September 1966 as Bylaw 4, the RDCK building inspection service issues building and plumbing permits and conducts building inspections throughout the entire geographic area of the Regional District.

The Building Inspection Department provides a public service to builders and property owners. The building permit process allows new buildings to be reviewed to ensure compliance with Canadian Health and Safety Standards, as well as the BC Building Code, and other applicable Codes and RDCK Bylaws.

The Building Bylaw regulates building construction and identifies the responsibility of property owners and builders in the RDCK. The British Columbia Building Code applies to the construction, addition to, and alteration of most buildings. The RDCK Building inspectors provide information to the public, review plans for potential problems and inspects at specified intervals.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay issues building permits and provides inspection services in Electoral Areas A to K and in the municipalities of Kaslo, Nakusp, New Denver, Salmo, Silverton and Slocan.

RDCK Building Offices are located in Nelson, Creston and Nakusp. Each office issues permits in their electoral areas, if you are unsure when a permit is required please review the building brochure. For inquiries in the municipalities of Castlegar, Creston or Nelson, please contact those municipalities directly.

We strive to provide timely service and require that proponents submit complete applications which can be processed efficiently. Permit processing and plan review turnaround times are dependent upon the workloads of staff. Completed applications turnaround time is approximately 6 weeks.
