Facility Operating Hours

Creston Landfill Hours Reduction as of August 1, 2026

Effective August 1, 2026, the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) will reduce operating hours for public and commercial traffic at the Creston Landfill (1501 Mallory Road) by one hour. The landfill will be open from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

This change follows direction from the RDCK Board of Directors at its September 2025 meeting, where staff were asked to identify options for preventing or reducing tax increases. The earlier closing time of 3:00 pm will reduce landfill operating costs by approximately $29,000 per year.

Traffic data gathered in both 2024 and 2025 showed that 90% of commercial and residential customer traffic at the Creston Landfill occurs between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm, while the site sees an average of just 0.5 commercial and 12 residential visits between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm per day.

Closing the facility for an additional day of the week was also considered, however, transaction data demonstrated that there was no single day of the week with consistently slower traffic, so the 3:00 pm closure was determined to have the least impact to customers.

Residents and commercial customers are asked to please plan on arriving no later than 2:45 pm Tuesday to Saturday, to allow sufficient time to weigh and unload.

Waste management is a collective responsibility. The RDCK strives to provide sufficient waste management facilities and access hours throughout the region to enable residents to successfully manage the waste they generate, while ensuring the cost of these services are reasonable.
