Short-Term Rental Registration and Compliance in the RDCK

In most zoned areas of the RDCK’s electoral areas, Short-Term Rentals (STRs) are not permitted. Property owners should review zoning regulations to determine whether STRs are allowed on their property.

The RDCK does not currently have a business licensing system and does not issue business licenses. As a result, there are no business licensing requirements for Short-Term Rentals in the RDCK.

STR operators must register their rentals with the Province of British Columbia and comply with all applicable RDCK regulations including zoning regulations, Official Community Plans, and Land Use Bylaws. Provincial registration and data-sharing requirements remain in effect and are enforced by the Province.

Erickson Water System Phase 1 Metering Project

The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is installing water meters on all industrial, commercial, institutional, and large agricultural (5+ acre) properties connected to the Erickson Water System as part of Phase 1 of the Erickson Universal Water Metering Project.

About Phase 1

Phase 1 metering includes approximately 136 meter installations on:

  • Industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI) properties
  • Agricultural properties with five or more acres of irrigation privilege

The current meter installation work is taking place through fall 2025, with brief water outages (typically an hour) expected during installation. Residents are notified 24–48 hours in advance through door tags. Meter installations for Phase 1 will resume in spring 2026.

2026 Budget Planning

The RDCK is in the process of preparing the draft (provisional) 2026 budget.

In regional districts, residents pay only for the services they receive. This means no single taxpayer in a regional district will be taxed in the exact same way because taxes are calculated on the specific services required. A unique aspect of regional districts is that unlike municipalities, money collected for one service cannot be transferred to another service area budget. It is crucial the RDCK takes the time to appropriately plan for each and every budget on its own merit.
