Transportation

The RDCK is interested in understanding how local transportation options can be improved. Through a 2-year pilot, the Rural Mobility Working Group is  looking into increasing active and low-carbon transportation options and supporting inter-connection between communities.

  • Active transportation includes walking, cycling, wheeling, skateboarding, and cross-country skiing—ways to move without a vehicle.
  • Low-carbon transportation covers active transportation, public transit, electric vehicles (EVs), and e-bikes.

Identifying Community Priorities

The RDCK has been engaging with community interest groups to better understand the priorities for our regional transportation network and explore creative solutions to the challenges we face. This process includes gathering input from various stakeholders and gradually building a clearer picture of how local government can best support these priorities.

Some of this work was informed by the 2023 Climate Action Plan public engagement feedback, which highlighted key community desires for improved transportation options.

Key insights from the engagement include:

  • Additional transit routes and increased frequency
  • Secure bike storage at bus stops
  • Safer infrastructure for biking and walking
  • Expanded transit access for rural communities
  • More trails

In May 2024, the Regional Transportation Summit: Exploring Low Carbon & Multimodal Options & Collaborative Action further explored these ideas and ways to collaborate on solutions.

In September 2024, the West Kootenay Cycling Coalition presented a Vision Plan for the Castlegar to Nelson corridor.
