Food and Agriculture

The RDCK supports regional food and agricultural systems through farm advisory services, policy development and advocacy, as well as data collection and research. This work fosters sustainability by strengthening local food systems, promoting resource conservation, and supporting long-term agricultural resilience in the RDCK. 

The RDCK is home to a variety of organizations working to foster a sustainable, thriving, and equitable food system. Here’s an overview of key programs and support available to farmers. 

Support for Farmers

The Central Kootenay Food Policy Council (CKFPC) work to build a just, sustainable, and thriving food system in the region by identifying challenges, seizing opportunities, and advocating for effective policies. sustainable and prosperous food system in our region by identifying challenges and opportunities and by advocating for effective policy.  

The Central Kootenay Farm and Food Directory offer resources and guides to local farms, food producers, markets, and seasonal eating. View the map of Central Kootenay food producers here. 

The Kootenay & Boundary Farm Advisors (KBFA) provide producers with free, technical production support and information from a network of specialized resources, including independent consultants and academics.  


RDCK Agriculture Planning

The Regional District of Central Kootenay Agricultural Area Plan was completed and endorsed by the Regional District Board in 2011. Please see below to access the final documents, including the Agricultural Area Plan and Background Documentation. 

The Regional District of Central Kootenay has made the Agricultural Land Use Inventory (ALUI) data available as an on-line mapping tool. This information is being provided for the purpose of building a common understanding of agriculture within the RDCK.
