Information Bulletin – Wildfire Update – August 2

RE: Octopus Creek Wildfire (N51800)

The Octopus Creek Wildfire, originated approximately 11 kilometres south of Fauquier and remains active and is currently listed as a wildfire of note by the BCWS. One of the main priorities is for crews to continue working on the north flank, building a control line to protect the community of Fauquier from the advancing wildfire and to re-direct the wildfire up slope. Crews are making good progress clearing burnable vegetation with hand ignitions and extinguishing hot spots on control lines. The Arrow Lake Complex (Michaud Creek wildfire, Octopus Creek wildfire, and Renata Creek wildfire) received three millimetres of rain overnight. The cooler temperature and increased humidity have improved burnable surface levels, however the larger fuels and deep soil remain highly combustible and would need significant rainfall to improve conditions. For more information on the wildfire and area restrictions refer to Arrow Lake Wildfire Complex Update, BCWS Facebook and BCWS Twitter.

An Evacuation ORDER from the RDCK remains for 168 properties in the communities of Applegrove and Fauquier. The area goes from the south side of Taite Creek, including the Taite Creek recreation site north to Grassy Point.

 RE: Michaud Creek Wildfire (N51765)

The Michaud Creek Wildfire, originated approximately 21 kilometres south of Edgewood, remains active and is currently listed as a wildfire of note by the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS). Good progress is being made by firefighters who continue to work on the control line, north of the wildfire. The objective is to prevent the fire from growing towards the north, north west. The south flank of the wildfire and the north of Renata Creek wildfire has been mostly inaccessible for rotary-wing due to smoke conditions. For more information on the wildfire, refer to Arrow Lake Wildfire Complex Update, BCWS Facebook and BCWS Twitter.

The Evacuation Alert from the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) was removed on August 2.

 RE: Trozzo Creek Wildfire (N51705)

The Trozzo Creek wildfire, originated approximately 7.5 kilometres northeast of Winlaw, is active and is currently listed as a wildfire of note by BCWS. Fire activity has remained largely stable. Humid weather on Sunday assisted crews in making good progress in containment along the fire’s western flank. Crews continue fire suppression along the Lemon Creek and Elliot Anderson FSR. The objectives for crews are to contain the western flank from Lemon Creek to Winlaw Creek, increase containment depth in the Trozzo Creek drainage, establish contingency guards north and south of the fire and plan containment guards for the south and east flanks to implement once the western flank is contained.  For more information on the wildfire and area restrictions refer to Southeast Fire Centre Update, BCWS Facebook and BCWS Twitter.

An Evacuation ORDER remains in place for 32 properties in the area of Popou Road, Rooster Road, and Lemon Creek Road. An Evacuation ALERT remains in place for 142 properties.

  RE: Akokli Creek Wildfire (N71686)

The Akokli Creek Wildfire, originated approximately 7 kilometres from Boswell, remains active and is currently listed as a wildfire of note by BCWS. Fire activity has decreased with some precipitation and crews have established good containment on the majority of the control lines along the south (Akokli Creek) and west above Boswell. Work is underway to develop a containment strategy within Lockhart Park and beyond if the fire continues to move north. For more information on the wildfire and current area restrictions refer to Southeast Fire Centre Update, BCWS Facebook and BCWS Twitter.

An Evacuation ALERT from the RDCK remains in place for the area from Lockhart Beach Provincial Park south to include 11721 Hwy 3A. The Evacuation Alert has been removed for properties south of 11721 Hwy 3A.

RE: Renata Creek Wildfire (N71245)

The Renata Creek wildfire is estimated at 3,252 hectares in size and is currently listed as out of control by the BCWS. Crews continue to build and reinforce control lines in priority areas. The fire continues to back down slowly toward the community, but there is no imminent threat at this time. For more information on the wildfire refer to Arrow Lake Wildfire Complex Update, BCWS Facebook and BCWS Twitter.

An Evacuation ALERT from the RDCK remains in place for the community of Renata and any other dwellings within the Evacuation Alert perimeter, on the east shore of Lower Arrow Lake in Electoral Area J.

High Streamflow Advisory for Southeast BC

High Streamflow Advisory for Southeast BC

Nelson, BC:  The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for streams in southeast BC. This advisory affects the eastern and northern areas of the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) and includes the Duncan River and tributaries. Residents are advised to stay clear of the fast flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the high streamflow period.

The RDCK Emergency Operations Centre reminds residents the risk of landslides is enhanced with the possibility of debris flow and rock fall during intense rainfall or rapid snowmelt. Residents should report landslides and floods to the Provincial Emergency Coordination Centre by calling 1-800-663-3456.

“Having watched what has occurred throughout the province over the last couple of weeks, it is imperative residents take these warnings seriously and know what risks exist in and around their community,” said Chris Johnson, RDCK Manager of Community Sustainability. “At this point, the best strategy is to stay informed by monitoring the local weather and current stream flows.”

The RDCK encourages residents to remain prepared for unexpected events or emergencies by making a plan and having a household emergency kit and a grab and go bag. Information about Evacuation Orders and Alerts in the RDCK can be found on the RDCK website, Facebook and Twitter. For details about evacuations and emergency preparedness, along with other resources, please visit http://www.rdck.ca/eocinfo.

Fire Prevention Week – October 3-9, 2021

Fire Prevention Week – October 3-9, 2021

Nelson, BC:  The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) Fire Departments are teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) – the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Weekfor more than 90 years – to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety”. This year’s campaign, October 3-9th, works to educate everyone about simple, but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

“It’s important to learn the different sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms,” said Gord Ihlen, RDCK Fire Prevention Officer. “Make sure everyone in your home understands the different sounds of the alarms and how to respond. To learn the sounds of your specific smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, check the manufacturer’s instructions that came in the box, or search the brand and model online.”

RDCK Fire Departments encourage all residents to embrace the 2021 Fire Prevention Week theme and to follow these safety tips to “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety”:

  • A continuous set of three loud beeps – beep, beep, beep – means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out.
  • A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.
  • All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years.
  • Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.
  • Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms meet the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.

To find out more about Fire Prevention Week programs and activities in the RDCK, please contact your local Fire Department at https://www.rdck.ca/EN/main/services/fire-services/fire-departments.html. For more general information about Fire Prevention Week and fire prevention in general, visit www.fpw.org.

Fire Fighting Equipment stolen from Merry Creek Wildfire site

Fire Fighting Equipment stolen from Merry Creek Wildfire site

Nelson, BC: The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is asking for the public’s help in the retrieval of stolen fire fighting equipment from the Merry Creek wildfire site. On the morning of Sunday, July 11, while performing fire perimeter checks, crews became aware of critical emergency fire fighting suppression equipment that had be stolen. The theft occurred sometime between Saturday, July 10 at 7:00 pm and the early morning of Sunday, July 11.

The stolen equipment, worth approximately $2,000, includes over 1,000 feet of forestry hose and six sprinklers. It had been deployed and set up to protect a home in the 500 block of Highway 3. Anyone with information is asked to contact Castlegar RCMP’s non emergency line at 250-365-7721.

“It is extremely disappointing and hard to imagine why anyone would steal this important, life saving equipment,” said Nora Hannon, RDCK Regional Fire Chief. “We want to make sure everyone in the community is aware the theft has occurred and ask anyone with information to please come forward to Castlegar RCMP.”

Sprinkler protection equipment is essential for RDCK Fire Departments to operate safely during wild land firefighting activities and allow fire departments to protect homes and other infrastructure within the RDCK. With the increased number of fires in the province it has made sourcing specialized equipment and purchasing suppression equipment costly and difficult as they are in short supply.

Examples of the stolen hose and sprinklers

The Merry Creek wildfire, located 8 km SW of Castlegar, started July 1 and grew to over 15 hectares. BC Wildfire Service along with Ootischenia, Robson, Trail and Castlegar Fire Departments spent three days battling the wildfire, preventing any structure damage and by Monday, July 5 the wildfire was determined to be 100% contained. Ootischenia Fire Department continues to conduct daily monitoring of the area, walking the fire perimeter looking for hot spots to prevent any potential fire spread.
