Nelson, BC: The start of the 2026/2027 ice season at the Creston & District Community Complex will be delayed due to project complexities associated with upgrading the facility’s aging refrigeration plant and ongoing supply chain challenges. Work on the refrigeration replacement project is now expected to be completed on August 20, allowing staff to begin making ice on August 21. As a result, the 2026/2027 ice season will now begin on August 27 instead of the originally scheduled start date of August 18.
The refrigeration replacement project includes replacing the compressors and chiller, along with completing safety code upgrades, including the installation of a new exhaust fan and vent stack. The refrigeration plant provides cooling for both the arena and curling rink. The curling rink season is not affected by the revised timeline, as its ice installation is scheduled for later in September.
Staff have contacted user groups with scheduled ice rentals to notify them of the impact to their rental.
“We recognize the impact this delay will have on local user groups, programs and the community, particularly as organizations prepare for the upcoming season,” said Trisha Davison, RDCK General Manager, Community Services. “Staff are working to get the ice ready as quickly as possible so the community can kick off the 2026/2027 ice season. We apologize for the disruption and appreciate the community’s patience and understanding.”
The change to the ice season start date will also affect the start of RDCK arena programs, including Stick and Puck, Youth Shinny, Public Skate and Adult Drop-in Hockey. Updated program schedules will be available in the RDCK program guide at rdck.ca/cdcc.
