Both the Rosebery and Kaslo Transfer Stations have had recent visits from bears in search of an easy meal.
In both cases, the bears were drawn to spoiled fruit and vegetables disposed in open stockpiles of Yard & Garden waste.
Without the barriers of locked bins, surrounded by electric fences, the mixing of produce in the Yard & Garden piles is inviting bears to these sites, resulting in damaged fences, service delays, and early site closures.
We want to do everything we can to keep customers safe, sites operating, and prevent bears from becoming habituated.
As the saying goes: “a fed bear is a dead bear”.
Please ensure that your Yard & Garden waste only includes hedge and grass clippings, weeds, shrubs, and tree branches 6 inches or less in diameter.
Any fruit or vegetable waste should be separated and disposed in the Mixed Waste bins, or Organic Waste bins where offered (Ootischenia, Grohman Narrows, Salmo, and Creston Landfill).
Please help keep people, sites, and wildlife safe by keeping food waste out of reach.
