Used Cooking Oil Recycling Program
Used Cooking Oil Accepted at the Creston Landfill for Recycling from March 15, 2025
What do you do with your used cooking oil? Without proper disposal options, some households may be tempted to mix used cooking oil in with garbage or pour it down the drain. Either of these options can lead to landfill leachate generation, sewer system blockages and overflows, and polluted ground or surface water!
Some good news for residents and small businesses in the Creston area!
The RDCK is now piloting a new diversion program, in partnership with service provider Leduc Industrial Inc., to divert used cooking oil from sewers and landfills to an upcycling program, producing a high-quality concrete release agent.
Disposing of used cooking oil is free of charge to residents in the Creston area, with a limit of 10 Litres per day. Disposals will be supervised by Landfill Staff, to ensure that contaminants are kept out. Disposals can be done during regular business hours at the Creston Landfill.
Please note, the following rules apply for cooking oil disposal:
- This service is only available to residents and small businesses in Creston and surrounding areas.
- Residents may dispose of a maximum of 10L of cooking oil per day.
- Larger producers of cooking oil may reach out to cooking oil collection service providers directly to arrange for collection services:
- Leduc Industrial Inc. (250-977-5050)
- MacLeod By-Products (1978) Ltd. (250-308-9081)
- Motor Oil, or any other materials besides used cooking oil, are Not Accepted for disposal! Residential waste motor oil may be disposed at Scrap King Autowrecking, and also during RDCK’s annual Hazardous Household Waste Event.
- Waste Cooking Oil must not contain any solids
- Waste cooking oil must be cooled prior to disposal
The program will run until October 31st, 2025, at which point RDCK Staff will report to the RDCK Board of Directors on its effectiveness and make recommendations on continuing and/or expanding into other areas of the RDCK.
