RDCK exploring regional park opportunity at West Creston Ferry Landing

The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is exploring the potential to establish the West Creston Ferry Landing, located at 2012 Kootenay River Road in Electoral Area C, as a regional park.

The Creston Dyking District has asked the RDCK to explore taking over management of the site to help maintain it as a recreational area for the community. The site is currently used informally as a public recreation area and includes a boat launch, informal fire pit and parking.

“The West Creston Ferry Landing is an important recreational site for the community, and we are exploring how the RDCK may be able to support its continued use and maintenance,” said Kristi Calder, Regional Manager of Recreation & Client Services.

As a first step, the RDCK has submitted an application to the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) for Non-Farm Use within the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). The application seeks authorization to lease approximately 1.2 hectares of the property for the purpose of establishing and operating a regional park.

No significant changes to the current recreational use of the property are being proposed. The intent is to formalize the existing use of the site and support its ongoing management and maintenance as a public recreational area. The ALC application process can take up to four months, with additional steps and approvals required before the site could be established as a publicly accessible regional park.

Residents seeking additional information about the project can email parks@rdck.bc.ca.
