Nelson, BC: On the recommendation of the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has issued an Evacuation Alert for one property and homes in the vicinity of Lightning Peak Road and Highway 6 due to the Inonoaklin Creek (N51198) wildfire discovered on Saturday, July 25. The property is located at 12212 Highway 6, northwest of the Needles Ferry in Electoral Area K. See map of the Evacuation Alert area below.
At this time residents or visitors within the area are not required to evacuate, however the RDCK advises people to remain vigilant and be prepared to leave the area at a moment’s notice. It is recommended to prepare an emergency kit and ensure preparedness, including moving pets and livestock to a safe area, in the event the situation worsens, and an Evacuation Order is enforced. Part of your plan should include where you can go if evacuated.
`The Inonoaklin Creek wildfire is estimated at 597 hectares. The suspected cause of the wildfire is lightning. The fire is visible to travellers along Highway 6, but there are currently no impacts to the highway. Winds over the weekend resulted in the fire growing. Suppression action has been taken to limit the spread of the wildfire. Airtankers have been laying retardant, while helicopters are bucketing water to limit fire behaviour on the south flank towards Highway 6. BSWS has also issued an area restriction for the Inonoaklin Creek Area. Under this order, a person must not remain in or enter the restricted area without the prior written authorization.
