Information Bulletin (Akokli Creek and Cultus Creek Update)- July 23

RE: Akokli Creek (N71686)

The Akokli Creek Wildfire, located approximately 7 kilometres east of Boswell, remains active and is currently listed as a fire of note by BCWS. At this time this wildfire is not immediately threatening structures. The fire is predominantly northward along the ridgetop and is highly visible along the highway corridor including Boswell, Creston and surrounding areas as well as those travelling along Hwy 3A. Fire is backing down on the west side towards the contingency line, but remains high on the slope. Crews are utilizing heavy equipment and helicopter support. Additional personnel are on route.  The area is hot and dry today and very smoky – winds are forecast less than the last few days.

An Evacuation Alert from the RDCK remains in place for the communities of Boswell, Destiny Bay, and Sanca on the east shore of the south arm of Kootenay Lake in Electoral Area A.

RE: Cultus Creek Wildfire (N71245)

The Cultus Creek Wildfire is estimated to be 1,826 hectares in size and is currently listed as out of control by the BCWS. The fire has provided challenges, jumping over cultus creek and coming down to the rail grade, but crews managed to keep it away from structures on Tye beach. The fire is moving south and crews will be there overnight and are monitoring.

An Evacuation Order from the RDCK remains in place for the area of Midge Creek to Next Creek, on the west shore of the south arm of Kootenay Lake, within the Kootenay Lake Provincial Park in Electoral Area A.
