Thunderstorms expected across the RDCK - Freshet season continues through June
June 12, 2020
Nelson, BC: Freshet season is still in full swing and the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) encourages all residents to be proactive in their preparation for any potential flooding.
Possible heavy precipitation associated with a cold front passage is possible throughout the next few days for the RDCK. Environment Canada issued a thunderstorm warning for the Arrow Lakes and Slocan Lake areas on June 12.
This type of weather has the potential to cause flash floods, landslides or debris flow hazards. It is imperative for residents to understand these potential hazards and key indicators that could be cause for concern, especially in the steep mountain creeks common in the Kootenay region. Check out the RDCK website for more information www.rdck.ca/befloodprepared
Indicators of a potential upstream hazard include
- Abnormally dirty water
- Accumulation of large logs or debris in the creek
- Sudden changes in flow
- Pulses in flow (ie. rapid changes in flow) or pulses of sediment
- Rapid accumulation of sediment or bedload along a flat section of a creek channel
To report a potential emergency please call BC’s Emergency Coordination Centre at the 24-hour toll-free number: 1-800-663-3456
