RDCK and Nelson Leafs to launch full-time Eco-Depot in Nelson

Nelson, BC: The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is partnering with the Nelson Leafs Hockey Society to expand their recycling centre at 120 Silica Street in Nelson to accept used oil, antifreeze, fertilizers, household cleaners and other materials in addition to the electronics, paint and beverage containers they have always collected. This kind of “Eco-Depot”—a one-stop recycling centre for materials that can’t go in regular recycling bins or the landfill—is the first of its kind in Central Kootenay. The Nelson Leafs Eco-Depot will open to residents on October 16, 2019.

“Residents who missed the recent RDCK Household Hazardous Waste Round Up events now have another option to dispose of household waste they consider dangerous or that they are unsure of,” said Tom Newell, Chair of the Central Resource Recovery Committee and Director of Electoral Area F. “This new program with the Leafs will allow us to collect more material throughout the year and will be convenient for local residents. This means we will be able keep these prohibited materials out of landfill or the environment and dispose of them safely.”

“The non-profit Nelson Leafs Hockey Society is extremely pleased to be able to partner with the RDCK to provide this much needed service to the District and to have received permission from the City of Nelson to be able to collect these materials at our existing Silica Street location,” said Jeff Wright, Vice President of the Leafs.

“The RDCK’s annual round-up events are very popular with residents,” said Travis Barrington, Resource Recovery Technician at the RDCK. “More than 800 people participated in events across the RDCK, and we were able to keep thousands of litres of used oil, antifreeze and paint out of our landfills and environment.”

Residents with very large volumes should contact the depot in advance, as individual container size may be limited. Commercial users must make arrangements with a waste disposal contractor.

For more information about what materials are accepted, or if you have large volumes, please contact the Nelson Leafs Recycling Centre at 250-354-4922 or the RDCK Resource Recovery Department at 250-352-8161 (1-800-268-7325), or visit www.rdck.ca/ecodepot

The RDCK wishes to acknowledge contributions from the BC Used Oil Management Association to provide collection infrastructure for used oil and antifreeze in Nelson. Product stewards already work with collectors throughout the district to collect many–but not all–of the materials that will be accepted at the Nelson Eco-Depot.
