Castlegar Complex survey results show support for Option B

Castlegar, BC:  Results from a recent survey of residents in Area I, Area J and Castlegar about potential enhancements to the Castlegar & District Community Complex have been tabulated and reviewed by the Recreation Commission. The results indicate that almost two-thirds of the community would support the full package of enhancements that were previously presented as part of the consultation process.

“Throughout this process, it has been important for the community to have their say on potential upgrades to their community complex. I would like to thank everyone for providing their input in this survey or through other consultation points along the way,” said Lawrence Chernoff, Chair of the Castlegar & District Recreation Commission. “The results give us confidence to move the project along to the next stage.”

The survey asked area residents if they would support Option B enhancements if asked to in a referendum. Out of almost 1,200 households that completed the survey, 62% said they would support Option B, and 38% said they would not. These findings are considered reliable and representative of residents in the area. The form and timing of a potential referendum will be considered by the Recreation Commission at their next meeting.

The breakdown of survey results by area is as follows:

Would   support Option B

Would not   support Option B

Castlegar residents (67%)

Area I residents (11%)

Area J residents (22%)

The Recreation Commission acknowledged that, although the results indicated majority support for Option B, many area residents felt the opposite.

“The Commission understands there are some residents who do not support Option B, and we appreciate you taking the time to tell us your views,” said Lawrence Chernoff, Chair of the Recreation Commission. “As we proceed through a potential referendum process and beyond, we are committed to continuing to gather feedback from the community and to understanding the diversity of opinions."
