Castlegar & District Community Complex Enhancement Project Update

The Recreation Commission is planning for enhancements to the Castlegar & District Community Complex (CDCC) and is consulting with residents to help determine design priorities. The process started as a result of the 2016 Master Plan identification of priorities.

As part of the “Build Your Own Activity Hub” consultation process, a survey was distributed to all households in Castlegar, Area I & Area J via mail during the summer. The survey asked residents to identify a preference for potential enhancement options based on feedback from an earlier Open House event held in May 2017. The survey achieved a high level of participation, with proportional representation from Castlegar, Area I & Area J.

The results of the survey indicate that 67% of respondents are in favour of a major enhancement project (28% Option A and 39% Option B) at the CDCC.

Option A includes:

  • Necessary improvements to arena storage and change rooms
  • Social hub–lobby and office expansion
  • Fitness Area Expansion–new fitness studio and storage-elevator and stair access to level 2
  • New Leisure pool-water features–change room retrofit–spray pad

 Option B includes:

  • All of Option A plus a 2nd ice sheet at the complex–teams rooms and lobby extension

 The Next Steps include:

“The Castlegar and District Recreation Commission is encouraged by the Community's response to the previous surveys and excited the community has clearly indicated it supports a project at the Complex”, commented Commission Chair Lawrence Chernoff. “However, what is not clear is the scope of the project and we need to determine that before moving forward to a referendum”.

As part of the next step in the engagement process, the Recreation Commission will be soliciting the next level of feedback from residents via an upcoming survey. The question on the survey will ask residents if they will support Option B in a referendum. More information on the survey and upcoming consultation events will be available in the coming weeks.
