Evacuation Alert - 20 km SW of Salmo, West of Hwy 6
August 9, 2017
The Regional District of Central Kootenay has issued an Evacuation Alert for the area of McCormick Creek, 20 kilometres southwest of Salmo in the Pend d'Oreille area west of Highway 6 due to a wildfire. See attached map provided.
The wildfire started on August 8 and has grown to an estimated 75 hectares in size.
Under an Evacuation Alert, residents and visitors should be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. It is recommended to prepare a 72 hour Grab & Go Kit and ensure preparedness in the event that the situation worsens, and an evacuation order is enforced.
Although there are only 23 residential properties on alert, the RDCK is aware that the Shambhala Festival could be threatened by further expansion of this fire. At this time, the Shambhala Music Festival is not under any Evacuation Alert or Evacuation Order.
Shambhala Music Festival could be placed under an Evacuation Alert or Evacuation Order should the fire situation worsen. The RDCK Emergency Operations Centre is currently working with RCMP, BCEHS, MOTI and Shambhala organizers to ensure public safety is maintained in the event of an emergency. Festival goers are encouraged to maintain a designated driver and means of quick evacuation from the area.
The RDCK will provide a further update at 10:00 am tomorrow after consultation with BC Wildfire.
